Fighting is the cool disciplined martial artist type opposed to Normal type's raw monstrous strength... except from the very first generation they were the butt of the 'dumb musclehead' joke with a very limited and impotent pool of Pokemon and moves, and they got absolutely destroyed by the real kings of the game, Psychic types (and not even just mechanically, but also in the plot, as Sabrina's gym overtook the Fighting Dojo in Saffron!)
Fighting suffered from being the joke type for years, and only started slowly gaining in coolness in gens 3 and 4, which is funnily enough *way after* Psychic got knocked down a peg in gen 2.
