The Pokemon series in general has a serious issue where it's not sure if Pokemon should be sentient partners that are basically like fuzzy people with a language barrier, or if they should be non-sentient animalistic pets akin to trained dogs. The series tries to do both at once and it fails because the two aren't entirely compatible, which leads to people pointing out things like the Pokemon food distinction or questioning the morality of keeping sentient Pokemon as pets and making them fight. There's also how incredibly awkward Amie gets when it comes to the humanoid sentients; petting an Alakazam and feeding it like a dog is just weird.
