He was a tunnel-vision ego in a way you could only pull off with tiny Game Boy scripts and even as kid that made me laugh. And he is actually still pretty novel as far as rivals go for having an inconclusive ending of sorts, not being joined at the hip to the main character the way most other rivals are, and going with an "edgy" team that matches his attitude regardless of good type match ups. He's not just another shade of the player with dialouge, which is where Game Freak largely otherwise landed on outside of Wally and maybe some of the Alola kids (haven't Gen 7, I don't know).
