>>55156459>>55155501I don't think it's talked about enough how generation 3 is such a weird generation when it comes to Pokémon designs. They were somewhere between coming off Generation 2's more natural designs and then the spikier/tougher designs of Gen 4. I gather they wanted to make the game feel more lived in and so the Pokémon took more inspiration from real world creatures instead of just being amalgamations of different ideas / generic animal but Pokémon. But they still had some of the old ideas in there, because you get crazy shit like Blaziken or Metagross mixed in with Shelgon or Chimecho who feel more like they would fit in with the first two generations. I think the issue is that Spoink kind of more follows the design philosophy of Gens 1 and 2 (it actually looks like something you'd find in the Gen 2 beta) but then it evolves into a Pokémon that uses the newer design philosophy of Gen 3. It starts as a fantastical creature that looks like it came out of a JRPG and turns into a purple pig with "cool" elements. I don't like it. I don't like it at all. It's very indicative of the jump they took going from the earlier generations to the middle, and the line is not cohesive because of it
