Battle Frontier, Sinnoh, Ash even considered using his reserves for Kalos but decided otherwise.
It's not like he forgot about them, he just goes out to acquire new pals for them while calling on them when he needs them for a fight. Remember, a lot of Ashs Pokemon didn't do a whole lot before he captured them. If anything he brought them to a new and better home while teaching them to be strong.
And if they want to battle, the ranch is filled with strong Pokemon so there is always someone to fight/train with.
