>>29058909I've half-played through S/E on my own (when I was younger / older with emulator), but I've watched my younger brother play Ruby and Emerald growing up. I'm currently playing OR right now, and it has been sitting around for a long time before I started playing.
The new mechanics are interesting enough, but not game breaking. I like being able to fly to kind of useful route spots. I like the "apps" that let you see how long your berries have been planted and the DexNav gives you encouragement to "catch them all", which I usually never care about. I like the "oh hey, let's head there now!" follow-the-story along transitions that speed up getting to the next event, that was nice. I like the "split timeline" effect of seeing this game differently than the originals (when I went to Mauville the first time I was like... oh shit what the fuck is this?!). What's her name, Courtney? She's kind of hot. I like that the characters have a bit more personality. I hear there is a bit of post game with Rayquaza, so that's kind of cool.
The bad? The game is easy as fuck. (OH BUT YOU CAN NOT USE THE EXP SHARE, fuck you, give me a difficulty setting; I shouldn't be presented with something while I play the game that sets the level of difficulty. If I was at it, I might as well play by "nuzlock" rules if I want to challenge myself. It's dumb. Pick "Casual" or "Traditional" style of play, give me "easy / normal / hard". It's not a hard concept.
Oh, and don't just give me legendaries, like Latios. FFS. I had to LIMIT myself to catching Groudon with ultra balls because the game gives you a Master Ball right before the fight (I think the originals did this too). I hear there's no battle frontier, and that makes me sad. Mega Evolution feels kind of tacked on from a previous game and doesn't perfectly fit (that's kind of true).
I don't know, it's bad in its own right, it's not terrible but it's not great. It's lacklustre comes from its difficulty, I think.
