The thing was a chore, the lifespan thing forced grinding, and the evolutions were an esoteric mess.
The best parts are pissing around with your partner, everything else was awful.
As for the anime, it broke its base during xros wars were it ditched several base things from the franchise just to make everything shinier and robotic.
Not to mention world as a franchise is little more than a random mishmash of genres because the last game sold like crap.
It wasn't until the pokemon-like digimon story that they made enough sales to warrant 7 games, one of which is coming out soon for the vita.
Pokemon games have their main line continuously updated, while spin-off games keep the tedium away.
