I think one thing it's easy to meme on early Special for and that maybe some people might dislike is the presence of some more late-game mons in places where they shouldn't be. I actually think showing mons from across the game back when the manga could still get away with doing so is one of the RGB arc's strengths and something it's good it took advantage of. It looks more impressive to start a story off with chapters called like Vs. Mew, Vs. Gyarados etc. than just Vs. Pidgey or Vs. Ratatta or whatever you'd get if it were written from a more straightforward literal gamelay perspective.
I think the later arcs go harder in having mon placement be more faithful to the games, and while I think that also makes sense in regard to accuracy, maybe it sort of sacrifices some of the dramatic effect of the earlier manga.
Okay that's it and sorry if these posts are annoying; I don't want to come off like I hate everything about Special so just wanted to name a positive too
