Male protag designs have been downhill starting BW2. The trend of blue clothed male started with Pt Lucas and continued with Hilbert, but Nate's design takes a turn for the ridiculous and Calem's blue top blue bottom makes him as generic as an NPC. The girls were pretty consistent for the most part, although the highs aren't as high as a good male protag design.
Scarlet and Violet's uniforms combined with the artstyle shift easily make them the worst protagonists, almost unsalvagable. Victor's default is horrible, but customization can at least save him a tiny bit.
I'd argue custom protags lead GF to intentionally design bland characters to incentivize the player to improve them and make them their own, and while that holds true for a lot of them, Gloria has a surprisingly coherent design with a unique flair compared to the more grounded clothes you buy at the store.
