They built Ash as defeating Tapu Koko from Day 1 of SM, and gradually built up his relationship and conflict with Kukui over the course of the show. They have also been building up Ash's interest in the World Tournament and Leon from nearly the beginning (just see bios and interactions where Ash wants to become the strongest after a 'certain encounter', which is clearly Leon. They planned Ash's goal from Episode 1).
Alain didn't even fucking exist until the specials, and wasn't even a thing in Ash's journey until the 94th episode of XY, about 2/3rds into the show.
Alain was nothing more than another anime original character, that existed purely to prevent Ash from winning the league. The only reason he had any special attention, was because Yajima wanted to suck his self-insert's cock off.
Gary? Since episode 1 of OS. Paul? Since nearly the beginning of DP. Tapu Koko and Kukui? The first episode of SM. Leon? Planned since the first episode of PM. The 'build-up' for Alain's rivalry with Ash is a fucking joke.
At least Tobias let Ash actually be cool and strong, Alain was just a shitty stone-wall to his victory.
