I remember when gen V was around the corner, DPPt was getting shat on for its myriad issues (bad designs, encounter rates of old vs new mons, caves, games hella fucking slow before plat) as well as some differences of opinion on the more serious story direction. Players who grew up on Hoenn were sucking its dick like it was the epitome of a Pokemon game, and hating on Hoenn became the flavor of the month. There was initially warm reception for BW, and then the bitter and jaded people remaining on the board hated it.
I was briefly on the boards when BW2 was upcoming, and everyone was pissed. There were two camps: "Why are you putting this much dev time into a sequel, just make a new gen", and "Where's my third version that combines black and white, why are you making me buy two games". People were angry.
I started browsing the boards again on the leadup to XY. Lots of people were mad about gen V. The designs were bad, etc. Now people who grew up on gen IV were around the boards, and touting it as the best thing since sliced bread. Familiar.
As I apparently always do because I always come back, I started going on the boards during SM spoilers. Now people who grew up on Unova were saying that gen V was the best shit ever, and XY was absolute garbage and the worst.
There's a pattern here, and it's "Gen N-1 was so bad! Gen N-2 is the best game GF has ever made, they haven't been good since"
We kind of skipped a cycle for the the third version in XY because Game Freak just completely dropped dev of Z in favor of getting gen VII out the door, but you can already see similarities to the BW2 release for people's complaints about USM
