The biggest exodus of fans from the series happened with Gen III who didn't return until HGSS, and most new fans couldn't give a shit about Hoenn because their first games were Diamond and Pearl; Hoenn will always be the middle child to Gamefreak, and they will never be pandered to like the newest fans and the oldest fans.
