They kept loving it when HGSS came out, and many still considered it better.
Ditto for both BW and BW2.
Actually, I think there is a very good comparison point between Platinum and USUM.
DP was atrociously slow in battles. Platinum fixed this.
SM had slow, unskippable cutscenes everywhere. USUM did not fix this.
