Our starter choices are Growlithe, Staryu, and Exeggcute. I go with Staryu because I always take the Water-type out of habit, and my rival takes Exeggcute to battle me. It knows Barrage so it's not the fairest of fights but Staryu, uh, finds a way.
I'm given an item called a Shiny Ring by one of Cedar's Aides. One thing to notice is the Bag now gives descriptions of items by choosing the "info" option; the Shiny Ring, when put at the top of the bag slot, raises the chance of finding wild shines to 1/64.
The wild encounter music is more badass than it has a right to be; I would've saved it for the Gym Leader music in fact.

I now have the Pokédex and can go on my journey.
