First Pokemon was originally a loan Graveler (Father->Daughter, the trainer ID never changed she just picked up the Pokeball so it never evolved) but her first capture was an Omanyte. She took up residence inside Mt. Moon for a few weeks, following it as it moved through the walls (think the Basilisk in HP:CoS being tracked through the pipes), and the Omanyte ... fell out from between the rocks, having been abandoned and stuck there. He couldnt mve very far/fast, especially in such a dry area, so Terra took care of it.
There's a much more elaborate story how she partnered with the Marowak.
