What they didn't support was the unjustified Iraq War that occured 2 years later and was totally unrelated to 9/11.
In response to France's refusal to join the Iraq War, the US government lauched a massive propaganda campaign against France (renaming French fries "Freedom fries", dumping French wine in the streets, spreading the surrender meme all over the place...etc).
And of course, the American people started hating on the French as told by their government (pic related).
