I understand that it's divisive over giving those Pokemon to already popular characters, but I don't think it's a bad move to try to make them more relatable or likable.
One thing I really liked in the story was despite the dicksucking the other characters do to Scottie/Bettie, they're not perfect. They flat out lose against Lear, giving actual stakes to get stronger unlike the main game protagonists. Villains like Giovanni don't crumble to you either, unlike other games where you just stomp the big bads. Besides BW, this is probably the only time I feel like the main characters in a Pokemon game actually have any kind of story arc for development
