But then we got FireRed and Leafgreen a couple of years later anyways with a bunch of Johto pokemon to boot in the postgame for it. Then we found out in Emerald that you can get the starters from Johto in the Battle Frontier too.
Even if you didn't have FireRed/Leafgreen, you could still use your bros in Emerald thanks to rental Pokemon in the Battle Frontier.
It sucked but we dealt with what cards we had, and GameFreak helped us alleviate it as much as they could.
