Then in the other mode, it would be more like classic Pokemon where if you wandered into an area there would be a legitimate chance of getting wiped out by trainers. Let THAT be the barrier, not some arbitrary roadblocks. SWSH would have been legitimately good if you were able to access Hammerlocke from the wild area or potentially gone to Motostoke or Hulbury first to fight the gym that you had an advantage against.
