A real life example, maybe would help.I became kinda close with one of my sister's friends. Knew her from middle school until we were like, me 16, her 15, and, I'll just say, developed feelings for her. I wouldn't call it a crush, since we knew each other and were friends, but romantic love is a stretch. She got into sex and drugs, ended up sneaking out of her house with her bf, he hit a deer, it went through the windshield and landed on her face. She's fine, btw, married with kids I'm happy to say. So basically how I felt in that situation, but far far less because I actually have a grasp on reality.
