For example, Band-aid and Dumpster used to be product names, but they were used so often it became a catch-all term. Nintendo probably doesn't want that to happen with Pokemon, so they're really aggressive with defending it.
Yes, there's plenty of Chinese knockoffs of Pokemon still around. The thing is, Nintendo probably WOULD like to C&D them, but because it's a foreign company, it wouldn't work. A Chinese court would NEVER defend a foreigner's copyright, so companies don't bother fighting a losing battle.
So that's why trademarks are so heavily protected, even if it's ultimately nothing but a name. People like
