There is also the question: If all you have to do is train yourself for ages to become an olympic runner, how come most people aren't? Because most people don't care that much. In fact, most NPCs in Pokemon either have professions or titles which indicate their main interests aren't specifically the training and battling of Pokemon. Those who do, such as Ace Trainers, Veterans or Gym Leaders, tend to actually be pretty tough. Go figure.
There is also the fact that it's a video game, so of course it's gonna be easy for you to just grind your Pokemon stronger. It's designed so children can beat it in like a few days. My point wasn't how realistic the time investment VS power increase is or isn't.
There is also the fact that Team Rocket takes hostages, so Police literally can't rush in guns blazing because that's not how the real world works either. Mafias deal in corruption and foul play, too, so it's really hard for anyone following the law to approach them without greatly endangering themselves or others. This is why a kid whom Team Rocket greatly underestimates ends up taking them down. Not because he's the only one able to, but because of circumstance. It could have been anyone were they in your position, but most kids wouldn't go up against the mafia. The player character does, and wins as a result. In fact, it's been shown that some adults in the Pokemon world are actually fighting back against Team Rocket. It's very obvious that Lance is stronger and more competent than you when you enter the secret hideout in Mahogany Town, but he still lets you tag along and even assigns you tasks to see how competent you are.
My point wasn't about Pokemon as a concept being believable or not.
