It wasn't until the summer camp arc that it really became clear to the viewer what the gameplan was for her. But once Pokemon performing became her goal, it started to make sense in retrospect given the things she did in XY07, XY21 and XY26.
XY39, it was like something lit up inside my brain and said, "Bingo, now they've REALLY got me interested in her". Her crush was always super cute, but the character development stuff at the beginning of the series needed work.
