You can read all you want into it, the fact that Goku dies on Namek would be read as being the supposed ending but you would say the same about Gohan taking up Goku's place as the protector of earth, hell not even the canon manga ending matters anymore Toriyama already retcon parts of it once and Super is on its way to completely retcon it. Don't try to read into Toriyama's work, he admits himself he's just a hack who wants to do gag mangas.
