I didn't know shiny Pokémon were a thing, I thought the Red Gyarados was like an event and nothing more, plus it was on my Gameboy Pocket so I could only notice the sparking stars at the beginning of the battle. Luckily, I did realize that was the same eff Gyarados had, so I imagined that was a new mechanism introduced in that game.
And Gold immediately become an even better Pokémon game than before.
