You had a lot of gaps to explore about between gyms, a couple of pretty tough moments which threw you off and you were given a generous variety of pokemon to play with. It all went to shit after the third gym though when every city was one route apart from each other rather than prior which made you go through 3-4 routes and a cave/foresty area.
