>>17840266This generation will never understand why those nukes were a terrible necessity. War is an awful, hellish thing, and sometimes terrible, awful things need to be done during it.
Either approximately 250,000 people were to be vaporized in a nuclear hellfire, or millions of Americans and Japanese were going to die during the planned invasion in a conventional war; just look at how Okinawa turned out. Civilians were tossing infants off cliffs so they wouldn't be captured; the population was fragging themselves with hand grenades to avoid capture. Some American GI's were institutionalized because of the shit they saw the Japanese do on Okinawa.
Besides that, Russia had declared war on Japan and was going to be getting involved. Had the invasion taken place, the entire country would be a disaster zone and the country would have been split in two after the war like Korea, Germany, etc.
Japan was dealt a deadly blow in the form of Little Boy and Fat Man, but it saved them big time in the long-term. Arguing with people who think otherwise is a waste of time because they either don't understand the history of that time, or are truly ignorant.
