Her emotional freak-outs aren't actually tied to an inflated sense of self-importance, she's literally just a wild girl who can't control herself sometimes.
In the manga story, she is compared to Pokemon a lot not just because she acts like an animal, but also because her heart is innocent and pure like a Pokemon's or something. Her kindness, even to people who treated her like she's stupid, is part of how she ultimately changes Ruby's heart, too.
