Statues are mostly weird, with a blank stare or even creepy in some cases depending on the culture that made them. So why people expected a cute Pokémon? How can be "it's stupid" an argument? Every statue on this pic will be stupid if they would have been copypasted inside the games to make a Pokémon. Probopass looks like a Pokémon, it was the best way to make a statue-based Pokémon. Even its appearances outside games are freaking good. And if you think the moustache is the problem, see again the pic and you will notice that beards on those statues have the same looking.
So no, I think it doesn't deserves the hate.
