>>55651812I'm planning on writing a big autistic review post at the end, and I think the biggest thing this game is missing out on is presentation value. All the references and stuff are there, but the implementation is so half-hearted for even major things like traveling partners being reduced to rival battles. Even just having them fade into your pocket as you travel together, as per JRPG norms, would be a step up from leaving them behind entirely. Better yet, they could've made them into a gameplay element. Imagine if once per realtime day, Brock cooked a meal and gave you a random assortment of berries as leftovers? With small things like that, a companion would still feel valuable even if they're not actively doing anything or fighting anyone.
