I really really liked were they were going with Platinum in terms of the cool story. The hugely powerful and well designed legendaries (everybody loves Giratina) and the great postgame content like Battle Frontier, upscaled rematches and roaming legendaries to chase down. Also the mansion you could buy and furnish was kino as fuck, I don't know why they never did that again (until now I guess you have the little clubhouse in Blueberry)
Gen 5 was also good and Kalos took the series in a completely different direction which honestly sucked. I hate X and Y for that reason.
