https://thespinoff.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/sam-56.jpgoverall there are 4 main trends in pokemon over the years:
1. From natural complex shapes to simple shapes. No brainer, simple shapes are both easier to draw and animate. "Factory produced", if you will.
2. From simple colors to complex color schemes and patterns. Also a no brainer, it's an easy way to add diversity without really doing much work. Also easy to animate unlike complex shapes.
3. Neotenization, or chibi/cutesy/whatever you want to call it. Bigger head:body ratios.
4. Gundamization: This was obvious from gen 4 onwards, but really started in gen 3. You can see the robotic "gundam-like" patterns on Grou/Kyo/Ray
5. Arabization/eurization of the protagonists' facial features/pigmentation, in order to appeal to a more western audience. More of a bonus trend as it doesn't really impact the pokemon.
