But generally the characters in Alola have some role to play. The Island Trial is a cultural event that everyone has done at some point. They all basically know each other, and the script is written with a-lot of colloquial language and banter to reinforce that. Like Nanu being characterizaed as this jaded old uncle, tired of everyone but doing his job anyway. Team Skull NOT fitting in is part of the narrative, where they're a bunch of dejected kids.
