It always was a fact that if you slap Pikachu's face into any piece of merchandising you'll get at least one million of sales.
If it were for me, I would make a much more difficult game, in which items are important, your starter becomes plot relevant, the game stats give some relevance to non-fully-evolved Pokemon, you can manipulate them better, etc.
But there are other people who think different than us; even here in /vp/ I may find people saying to me that making your starter a character is a horrible idea and would rage after finding out they can't box them because of plot.
Things in general are much more enjoyable if you learn to accept good things instead of complaining for the bad things.
