It is often made clear that Pokémon who live with humans are pretty much able to fully take care of themselves. Even smarter pets are capable of some self-care, so I can see that aspect of raising Pokemon to be that bad. In one of the movies, a Pokémon is able to raise a human child.
Now, FEEDING them, that would be the trick, because it is also made clear that Pokémon eat more than the average person. Nobody seems to have an issue with it, but they have set up their society to accommodate it. It would be rough on Earth.
