Long answer: There are fuckloads of tutorials out there, and you can make a crystal hack using Essentials and RPG Maker if you import your own tilesets that are gen II style. The vast majority of your time up front will be spent editing sprites and mapping--which is a lot of fun. Super cozy. Once you get deep, you will find yourself into tutorials that explain the scripting process and there are also loads of tools and pre-made scripts for doing whatever you need.
So basically, just jump in and you'll pick up the requisite skills as you go. I am a 27 year old Uni professor working on my own hack just for the fun of it during the moonlight hours, and I have never coded before in my life. Have a drink, put some tunes on, and start with mapping/sprite editing. You'll figure the rest of it out.
