Ash's battle against Clay felt almost like it was a different series altogether from his battle with Elesa. He began by acknowledging type differences and taking advantage of them, until he decided to use his Roggenrola against Clay's Excadrill and won by bullshit anyway. At least there wasn't a mid-battle comment from him about how strategy was stupid and he needed to trust in his Pokemon.
And again, Black and White does a good job of actually explaining game mechanics and evolution types to the viewers. I was impressed that they did a link evolution in XY with Jessie's Pumpkaboo, but it seems that started here with the Accelgor and Escavalier trade. It does however confirm that trade evos are canon in the Pokemon anime, which means Kenny somehow traded to get an Alakazam. That's suspicious as hell, since Kenny has no friends.
