We know that other dimensions are canon thanks to Ultra Beasts, and I believe that alternate dimensions can also be parallel universes. In Sun and Moon, you can travel to a world where the day-night cycle is reverse of what it is in your version, which implies that players in Moon travel to the Sun dimension and vice versa. That means that Sun and Moon are parallel universes themselves, too. I'm guessing it's the same for Scarlet/Violet.
So yeah, it's entirely possible that the time machine actually only opens some sort of wormhole to other dimensions like it happened with Ultra Beasts. But as you said, it's all speculation so far.
