I like what I've seen of Cilan so far, though I'm not a fan of how he joined the group. His reason (Ash having a strange taste or something) is pretty weak. Unlike Brock or Misty, he seemed pretty satisfied with his home situation. But I think with BW they were interested in recreating some of the beats of Kanto. Cilan being sort of the ersatz-Brock, and I guess that mostly means he cooks for the group, and his "tasting time" has a different quirkiness than Brock being a skirt chaser. Iris as the ersatz-Misty explains a bit of why people didn't like her. With Ash being reverted back to 10 years old, Iris was above Ash's level the same way Misty was, and acted like it, like Misty did. When you get used to Ash being the mentoring figure to May and Dawn, Iris seems like a know-it-all for explaining basic concepts to him. But, you know, he does need those explained to him, and Iris is right 100% of the time.
