Pic related is a comparison between the protoype and final Chikorita sprites with a monochrome palette, Gen 1's SGB palette, and Gen 2's SGB palette.
As you can see, the prototype sprite was made with monochromatic palettes in mind, so it doesn't adopt multi-colored palettes well. Later on, the final sprite was revamped specifically to take advantage of the new color capabilities, and as a result looks great with either monochromatic and multi-colored palettes.
