Psychics were pretty overpowered in Gen 1 for reasons we should all know by now. Their only solid counters were Ghosts, who for some idiotic reason were all dual typed as Poison so they were weak to what they were supposed to be strong against. I've never liked using things that are just super powerful, and preferred to win with middling tier Pokemon (I still don't like to use Pseudos, much less Pixies or real legendaries in battles).
So in Gen 1 I never used any Psychic types, and grew to dislike them very much because of their power. I wanted to go against the grain, and specialize in something that could beat Psychics. Gengar didn't work, but then Gold and Silver came out with Misdreavus and I finally got my mono ghost type. It was my favorite Pokemon all through Gen 2. I fell out of Pokemon during Gen 3, but after getting a job in 07 I caught up on Gen 3 and then immediately bought Gen 4 and nearly shit my pants when I found out that they have Misdreavus an evolution.
That's all there is to it really. Mismagius has been my favorite Pokemon since Gen 4, and I work it into every team I use even with its UU-tier stats. I hope it gets a Mega someday ;_;
