Surge being a young veteran stationed in Japan, with soldiers at the Gym telling you their war stories. Or the international police hunting down Team Rocket. Even as late as Gen 5, you have Reshiram/Zekrom's heroes going to war with each other throughout history. Or the Swords of Justice isolating themselves from humans out of disgust (probably should've put those 4 in this game, now that I think of it). Kalos drawing on issues from France and Europe isn't that out of ordinary.
