>butt-of-jokes weakling with delusions of grandeur, a vindictive streak, and a desire to become stronger at any cost>becomes strong>gets drunk on his own powerHe had it repeatedly shoved in his face that digimon can effortlessly grow stronger as long as they're paired up with a kid who cares about them, and he was lonely and because of his shitty attitude he was remaining that way. So he went on a murder spree to gain power to justify his loneliness as a choice. Basically "I don't need anyone to get stronger."
Beating Guilmon and Takato would be the ultimate proof he was right in that.
>Murder streak for no reasonThere is a lot of reasons, it is showed to us that the digital world is mostly survival of the fittest, if you don't evolve you are trash and you will probably die, Impmon still has that mentality, that is why it hit him so hard not being able to evolve, when he was rock bottom someone gave him the chance to evolve, the thing he wanted the most, accepting to kill the gang, then when he evolved that thing that happened to terriermon happened to him but in a way bigger scale, he became hungry for power and also tried to act all edgy so his emotions don't interfere on his mission to kill the gang. This is not only a perfectly logical explanation, but one entirely reliant on the character's innate personality and character arc centering around his power hunger and loneliness.
If that doesn't make sense to you, the problem is with you, not the the writing. I can't chew your food for you.
Him deciding to become better by himself rather than being forced to do so by the main characters gives him far more agency as a character and is far more impactful.
