For the most part, the Contests/Tripokalon's were aimed at girls.

All the rivals like Drew/Harley, Zoey/Ursula, Shauna/Millefui were all based on shoujo manga/anime tropes.

May/Drew's rivalry ship with roses, Harley being the flamboyant gay rival, Zoey being the lesbian prince with girly girl Dawn, Ursula being the "mean bitch," Shauna being the bisexual best friend, and Millefeui being the tease for Serena's crush and also possibly lesbian.

What's interesting is how popular this all was with male fans. The writers aimed this stuff at girls but I think guys like it the most.

Dawn/Kenny was like the writers trying to do May/Drew over again but failing spectacularly.

That's why they dropped it and went back to focusing on Ash/Dawn's strong bond or Dawn/Zoey moments.

Wait, are you really trying to say Drew didn't like May? His entire character was trying to flirt and swoon May off her feet from day one, giving her roses and then acting arrogant with her to her interested.

There's also episodes where Drew shows subtle jealousy of both Ash and Harley. May didn't start to realize she liked him until late AG, but Drew was pretty interested in her from the start.

May/Drew was a lot different, because they had a bickering relationship at first and May had to prove herself to him. May didn't start off liking Drew right away, she doesn't even blush for the first time until the Hoenn Grand Festival...3 years into AG.

If May started off as like Drew's fangirl when they first met, that would be a different story. Their rivalrly was similar to Ash/Gary's.

They kept Wally's green hair and Roselia and gave it to Drew, but of course Drew was a pretty boy with some Gary-like traits at the beginning. Of course Drew's real purpose was to give May's Contest arc a shoujo story to attract females to it.

I'm kinda surprised May and her rivals never got any real follow-up after AG ended. Contestshipping was incredibly popular in Japan too. And Harley is popular himself.

During the Wallace Cup when May said she kept losing to Drew/Harley and we saw them watching her performance I almost felt like that was a lead-in to a short set of specials of her in Johto (which as said would have made sense at the time since HGSS also came out), but it didn't happen.

My guess is the writers were originally intending Dawn/Kenny to be the next Contestshipping but Kenny was disliked even by female fans so they dropped it.

Dawn then went on to be subtly shipped with both Ash and Zoey instead, but never to the extremes where it could be considered canon.
