The only reason Professor Elm was surprised by the MYSTERY Egg is because, surprise, it was a fucking mystery as to what pokemon was inside of it.
Elm even fucking tells you, that based on his RESEARCH (ie: other fucking eggs before that one) carrying it around will make it hatch.
