When Tamers went into background detail and talked about how they were an abandoned project to make AI which gained sentience and spread like a virus, it was finally more compelling as a foundation.
Again comes the consistency problem with Digimon, because in other canons they're more like a modern digital evolution of Japanese obake, inanimate objects that eventually take life. That's all something I'm into but things like SMT and YKW already filled thay niche
