Gen 1 had the perfect style (the official art anyway) and all the subtext/intended atmosphere was great. All of the designs were good for one reason or another, and it set up an engaging setting considering how limited and experimental this was back then.
Gen 2 kept that and added more, it is the only generation that's a marked improvement over its predecessor in every way. It managed to greatly improve the setting, the features, the style, the scope, and the formula on virtually the same hardware.
Gen 3 was a pretty good continuation with a few good gimmicks, but it dropped too many features from gen 1 and 2 and the style change is arguably better.
With gen 4, the quality was more mixed than any of its predecessors, and the art/style noticeably deteriorates. The best game from this generation is a remake of gen 2.
Gen 5 introduces/reintroduces some good features, and it tries to "reboot" the series by including only new monsters, which would be commendable, but it misses more than it hits and the style continues to deteriorate. It's probably the best gen since 3.
Gen 6 half-assedly picks up where gen 4 left off.
Gen 7 picks up after that with slightly better ideas and slightly better results, but it bloats the games with more filler.
