Recently I had this retarded idea of taking splitting up the 18 types into 36 new types based on whether the moves are physical or special. The types would then be tied to being physical/special like pre-gen4. I tried to name the new types based on move descriptions.
Some examples:
>fighting: martial & chi
>flying: bird & wind
>ghost: shadow & spirit
>ground: ground & sand/mud
>poison: venom & sludge/acid
>rock: rock & crystal/cosmic?
>water: "fish" (collective for aquatic animals) & water
>dark: rogue & oni
>steel: metal & light
>fairy: cute & fairy/lunar
For others it gets more difficult:
>grass would be plant & solar, but the drain moves should go into plant instead of solar
>normal could be normal/beast & sound, but both feel like they should do physical damage
>hyper beam should probably fall under light instead
>physical bug moves fit "bug" just fine, but special ones make more sense divided over other types
Then there's electric, fire & ice in which the physical moves are just elemental-powered normal attacks. Ice has attacks with actual ice vs cold wind/beams but the split still feels weak.
Psychic is also difficult as it's a mishmash of telekinetics, light, attacks on the mind and magic tricks. idk much about ESP in Japanese culture
