I remember SM being bizarrely overhyped on internet circles. "It all comes together!". Ultra Beasts looking like humans. No more Gyms, which sent Ash fans into an absolute frenzy. Regional Variants. No HMs. Seeing Red and Blue as adults. There was much discussion about SM.
But then, once the game came out and people struggled to get past the tutorials. Replay value was poor. Empty lots all across the region, suggesting either lost content or a sequel game down the line. The unfinished "Jurassic Park". Online was worse than Gen 6. Post-game is just another Battle Tower, with a handful of cameos. It's not a terrible game, but it did not live up to the anniversary game hype. Then USUM came out with way more content, which soured the perception of Gen 7 as a whole.
