Note the treacherous path from New Bark to Cherrygrove, but the quick, encounterless route back to NBT, due to carefully placed ledges. The route is also not a straight line (Like the one by Fuschia in GS) while not being an insanely complex maze. No one gets lost, but its not "hold one direction until the other side" either, and theres a lot of grass, particularly one patch that leads to a Potion, the second most coveted item in the game at that point behind PokeBalls.
Even kalos' route 2 (effectively the first route) is just a north path with a maximum of around 8 grass tiles to get to Viridi-- Santalune Forest
